MADRID (AFP) - Infinity Exploration Company expects to finalise a deal "by next month" on a pipeline that will transport gas across the subcontinent from Iran, CEO of Infinity Gas and Oil told AFP on Thursday.

Phoenix Lake Oil and Gas Ltd. has agreed to be taken over by privately held Infinity Exploration Company in a combination creating a bulkier northeast British Columbia-focused, natural-gas-weighted producer.

Baker Hughes in Houston says the number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. rose by eight this week -- to reach 1,921.

Baker Hughes released the rig count earlier than usual because of the July 4th holiday on Friday.

One year ago the rig count stood at 1,752.

Oklahoma gained nine rigs, Texas added eight and New Mexico gained one.

Louisiana, Colorado and Alaska each lost two rigs.

The California and Wyoming rig counts are unchanged
